Waldviertel
The Waldviertel stretches across the southern foothills of the Bohemian Massif. Extensive forests cover the gentle ridges of the plateau. Species-rich bogs, dark fish ponds, vast hop, poppy and potato fields characterise the landscape and the culinary specialities of the region. Numerous monasteries have served as meditative retreats for centuries. And the many castles and medieval towns are evidence of the region’s former economic importance.
