Eisenwurzen
Wild rivers and streams carve gorges through the rugged mountains, just as the iron ore takes root through the rock of the Erzberg. Early modern iron processing characterised the landscape. Numerous forges and hammer mills still bear witness to this past. Two national parks, Gesäuse and Kalkalpen, and a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, the Dürrenstein-Lassingtal Wilderness Area, protect the species-rich and extensive forests of the Eisenwurzen and offer plenty of rest and relaxation.
